As Far Back As I Can Remember ...
As far back as I can remember, I always knew I would be a dentist. I remember telling my mom in the fifth grade that one day I would be a dentist, and from that day forward, I knew in my heart that’s what I’d do. I grew up in a very small town, Santa Fe, Texas (just outside of Galveston, Texas). After school and during the summers while I was in high school, I worked as a Dental Assistant. I loved it.
After graduating from Santa Fe High School, I attended The University of Texas in Austin, where I received a BBA in Business Management. While at U.T. I served as President of the Beta Kappa chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, professional business fraternity. To this day, I keep up with my fraternity brothers … thank you, Facebook. Also at U.T., I served as an R.A. (Resident Assistant) in a non-air-conditioned dorm. I think this is why we currently keep it so cold in our office. In addition, I walked-on to the U.T. Baseball team, playing second base, and center field. I soon realized it was either baseball or dentistry … and although I was a pretty decent opposite field hitter, I’m much better with a hand-piece in my hand than a 34″ Louisville Slugger.
After graduating from U.T., I was accepted to all three dental schools in Texas. (UT San Antonio, UT Houston, and Baylor in Dallas) The only thing I really knew about Dallas at the time was that this is where we played our arch-rival- OU, the show “Dallas” and of course, the DallasCowboys. While visiting Dallas and interviewing at Baylor, I fell in love with North Texas and knew this was the place for me. It felt like home, so I chose Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas.
My Love For Cosmetic Dentistry Began To Develop
My senior year project in dental school was to try this “new” dental technique called “Porcelain Veneers”. This was 1988, and the term cosmetic dentistry hadn’t even been invented. That said, I’ll never forget that first patient’s excitement when I handed her the mirror for the first time and she saw her gorgeous new smile. I knew right then and there that this would be my calling. Since then, I am so grateful to have created and provided thousands of smiles and smile make-overs for patients here in McKinney, North Texas, and actually all over the country. I would love to create a new smile for you.
While in Dental School, I served as President of Delta Sigma Delta, Professional Dental Fraternity and this is where I met my best friend, and current dental partner, Dr. Jeff Lynch. We dreamed of working together one day, and it was so rewarding to launch McKinneyDentist.com with him and Dr. Markham in 2005. There’s something very special about working with your best friends. While in dental school, I also worked part-time as a club DJ. I mention this only because while spinning records (those now, rare 12″ round pieces of vinyl) I was introduced to the most beautiful girl, Leah Patterson. Although I know you’re not supposed to say you picked your wife up at a bar … almost 30 years later, I sure am glad she was there that night!
Dr. Berlin enjoys playing tennis, loves flying, photography, and recording dental how-to videos. He and his lovely wife (Leah) have two beautiful daughters (Annie and Tori).
I am so proud of our practice here in McKinney because I get to work beside three of the best, most talented dentists on the planet (Dr. Lynch, Dr. Madden, Dr. Morkos and Dr. Callison). Between the four of us, we have over 80 years of experience and with that, we have seen just about everything. In addition, we are all great friends and that creates a unique environment for our patients. Finally, we have truly the greatest staff to help serve you. Our average team member has worked at McKinney Dentist for over 15 years and we all feel as if it’s one big happy family.
If you ever have a question about anything dental, please feel free to contact me 24/7 at drberlin@gmail.com.
I look forward to meeting you soon!
